Applying a Surface Vertical Rod Exit Device

Solution Center > Applying a Surface Vertical Rod Exit Device
My company is managing a [very] large nationwide project for a new customer – the client wants to install surface vertical rod exit devices on one opening of their high-security facilities. The issue that has exhausted all of our potential solutions is they have no desire in changing their keyway. What kind of entry hardware can be used to activate the rim mounted exit device AND accept a mortise cylinder?

This one took some collaboration and creative brainstorming on our part. The entirety of our Electromechanical Solutions team as well as our resident hardware guru, Rob, locked themselves in our conference room on many an occasion to brainstorm possible solutions. Alas, after exhausting several possible solutions, we came across the Adams Rite 3080 entry trim.surface vertical rod exit device

Surface Vertical Rods – The Solution

This entry trim provides outside activation of either narrow stile aluminum, wood, or hollow metal doors that have any type of Adams Rite Exit Device. A breakaway clutching mechanism protects the locked handle from vandalism or forced entry, in either direction. This also makes the trim re-handable in the field.  On a project with this expansive of a scope, that’s definitely going to be utilized.

All models share the same core components, so handles can be changed without having to replace the entire trim. If you’re looking for a product to integrate with an access control system, Adams Rite has an electrified version of the 3080 entry trim to integrate with cardreaders, keypads, and other access control devices.

You may be wondering – why does this particular trim work when others won’t? This entry trim accepts a mortise cylinder, which was crucial to the success of the project. Generally, the tailpiece of a rim cylinder is needed to activate the rim mounted exit device, but in this case there is a separate tailpiece to provide activation. The tailpiece is part of the device itself, therefor the mortise cylinder can remain in place and a new keyway isn’t necessary.

While these types of projects can be stressful, they are what LockNET thrives on. Finding a solution that you didn’t know existed and saving the day for a massive project puts a little pep in your step at the end of a long day.
