Best Practices > Time for a Tune-Up: Door Maintenance

door maintenanceWith fall upon us, I always like to take time to do a little routine door maintenance. You should do the same. Even if your door is still under warranty, it’s always nice to go through a few simple steps to keep it in good working condition.

None of these tips are too complicated, most  can be checked in a matter of minutes. Many , in fact, can actually be quickly completed on your own. This makes it one of those tasks you don’t dread because you know it isn’t going to take you all day to finish it.

Let’s get to it.

Door Maintenance Tips

Is Your Door Working Correctly?

I know, this seems a bit obvious..

But if you ask yourself this one question, you can save yourself a lot of grief.

If you notice your door is dragging in any way,  isn’t latching correctly, or even not  shutting all the way, these  flaws may  signal  bigger problems to come. The good thing is, if you catch them before they turn into bigger issues, you will save yourself a nice chunk of change. The resolution can often be something as simple as adjusting a door closer. The key is recognizing the problem early.  If you do that, you’ll likely be in good shape.

Do You Have The Proper Grade Hardware Installed?

If you’re using an incorrect grade hardware on any part of your door, you can expect  trouble.

Proper grade hardware is key to keeping your doors in prime working condition. Without it, you can expect leversets to wear down faster, latches to break easier, and door closers to sag sooner. And those are just a few examples.

Using the proper grade hardware is something you should have done from the start. However, if you hadn’t, and now require replacement parts,  ensure  the replacement hardware is of the recommended grade. It might cost you a little more money up front (better grade hardware typically does), but it will save you in the long run with less repairs and maintenance fees.

Have You Lubricated Your Door Recently?

Making sure your doors run like well-oiled machines is really important. Not only does l the screeching sounds of poorly-oiled doors drive your customers crazy, it can also cause some long-term damage.

Check and see what the factory recommends for your door  lubrication (sometimes it can be WD-40, other times  it can be some sort of dry lubricant such as graphite powder).  Scheduled lubrications  should keep your doors in good working order.

There are a few other minor things you can check  like making sure the strike is clear of  debris and that there aren’t any loose parts on the door, but those are so simple and should be checked on a regular basis  anyways.
