IFTTT – Automating the Internet

Random & Interesting > IFTTT – Automating the Internet

A couple months ago I read a blog post about this awesome online tool, IFTTT. Wait, what?! It stands for If This, Then That. The site has you create, what they call, recipes to ‘put the internet to work for you’. It lets you automate things that are so convenient and efficient it’s absolutely AMAZING!

What does IFTTT do?

I stopped watching the news a few years ago, which normally isn’t an issue (I get caught up on current events online), but it’s not unusual for me to send my 3-year-old son to school in flip flops when it’s supposed to rain, or no jacket when it’s suddenly supposed to be 60 degrees instead of 75. So, the first recipe I set up was a weather notification. Every morning I get a text from IFTTT with the weather forecast for the day. No more sandals in rain at my house!

Here are some other IFTTT recipes I love:

  • If a new book is added to the Kindle Top 100 Free eBooks, email me
  • Email me 10 Things to Know This Morning (Another way I get updated on Current Events)
  • Craigslist Search to Email (IFTTT will run a search query for “x” everyday and email the results)
  • New WordPress Post updates your Facebook Status
  • New Facebook Status adds a new Tweet on Twitter
  • New Follower on Twitter or Like on Facebook send them a thank you

Endless Possibilities

Right now IFTTT has 55 active channels that can be combined in an infinite combination however you like. But there are also TONS of recipes that people have already set up, and these people are creative! You can just click the ‘use recipe’ button and you don’t have to generate all these things yourself! 1. I wish I could say this only happened a few times, but that’s definitely not the case. Oops! IFTTT has brought me up to speed with the modern technology of meteoroly.
