audit trailsEver since the breach in healthcare in the past couple of years, the security of our information has been at the forefront of our minds. Granted, it seems like all of the breaches have been of the digital type, but this isn’t true.

Did you know that many of these breaches in security occur because the actual devices that hold the information are stolen? In fact, according to this article on BitGlass, 68 percent of breaches since 2010 have been because the devices or files were stolen. With everyone required to have insurance now, the amount of private information has greatly increased which means now, more than ever, is the time to increase security on healthcare information.

Audit trails are a great option if you work in the healthcare industry and you’re responsible for the protection of this information.

Audit Trails: The Options

Audit trails can range from basic to extensive so a facility manager needs to take into account exactly how much information he or she wants to gather from the locks on his doors. As technology continues to progress, the capabilities of audit trails will expand, as well.

If a very extensive compilation of information isn’t something you believe you’ll need, a basic audit trail for your facility is suitable. A badge swipe or code input works easily and gives the facility  manager (or whoever runs the audit) a list of who was in the building and at what time.

If you would like a bit more information and you need a tighter grasp on your occupants, basic audit trails might not be sufficient. Badges can be stolen and codes can be seen and this allows for the opportunity of misconduct.

Extensive audit trails have the option of including software that can record who was in the building, what time they entered, what time they left, and which doors they used within the facility while they were here.

With the amount of confidential information stored within certain files in the healthcare industry, extensive audit trails are a great option and one that puts a lot of minds at ease.
