While we do focus the majority of our time on the security of commercial facilities, we still know a thing or two about how to increase home security. People often assume, to increase the security of your house, you have to invest a lot of money.

We were recently asked, “I want to increase my home security, but I don’t have a lot of time or money in the budget for something like this. Do you have any suggestions?”

I actually have some excellent news for you!

There are several options available.

Lighting

Who knew that simply flipping on your front porch light could increase home security?

(Probably lots of people, but entertain me.)

A lighted entryway is a sure deterrent against thieves. More light means a higher chance of getting caught and getting caught means a higher chance of going to jail.

Motion sensors are a great way to scare would-be thieves away, but if you don’t happen to have those on hand and aren’t in the position to buy some at the moment, solar-powered lights are inexpensive, easy to install, and will work just as well. Plus, they can be found at almost any local hardware store.

Everyone is much better off with a lighted entryway.

You get to keep your house secure and people don’t go to jail. A win-win all around.

Deadbolts

Deadbolts are a mainstay at most homes. They’re simple to install and easily found at your local hardware store. The problem with most deadbolts doesn’t lie in the lock itself, but in the cavity it is supposed to fit into.

Often, people slap on the deadbolt and the strike plate and call it a day. That’s probably going to work just fine, but why not really amp up your security with one swift move? If you drill the cavity deeper into the door frame, you can create a space that’s better equipped to house the bolt and less likely to be pried open.

Shrubbery

“Whitney, how is planting some pretty little bushes underneath my windows going to help?”

I get it.

It sounds a little weird, but it’s actually a very easy way to increase home security. A lot of time, thieves get into houses through unlocked windows on the ground level of your home. If you have some rose bushes or any other type of shrub with particularly sharp leaves or thorns underneath your windows, thieves are less likely to try and climb through them.

Thorns and sharp leaves equal cuts and scrapes and even thieves like to avoid those if they can.
